NEW! No Fear Shakespeare: http://nfs.sparknotes.com/ Compose and Create Resources: Writing an Editorial:
New Resources: Submitted by Marcy Waldner: ELA 30 DLC Developer Podcasts: In their Shoes - (CBC) it interviews and has oral story narration from new Canadian immigrants who discuss the significance of the shoes they were wearing when they arrived in Canada.. or the difference between the types of shoes they wore in their home country compared to here (ie: flip flops are the standard in African countries vs closed / covered shoes in Canada) You can play pieces of it or the first 20 mins etc. **Legends of the Mik'maq** - (CBC) it has several examples of oral storytelling. The first one runs 17 minutes and includes sound effects, different speakers narrating their parts, etc. Very well done!
Videos and Radio Spots: The Heritage Minutes has many video clips but also radio spots with clips on Sam Steele or Sitting Bull that could be very useful. It even has some Heritage Minute Parodies for fun, too. This site has the videos and radio bits.
Documentaries: The Whale - I haven't watched this yet because I don't think I'll have time to use it, but it looks like it was really well done. Produced by Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johanson about a whale that was abandoned by its pod in B.C. who then started befriending people, boats, animals along that coast and has now become an attraction for tourists. It relates to a social issue of important to Canadians (fits the sub unit at the end of the course) - it's a federal offence to touch / interact with ocean wildlife so it debates what should happen with this lone whale - allow interactions with it for companionship or cut it off from that so it will remain wild. Trailer available on youtube.
Club Native - (National Film Board of Canada... we're going to see if our division can purchase the user rights) Includes narrative by Manitoba-native Adam Beach who is a well-recognized Hollywood Native actor. The documentary debates the current realities of the Indian Act imposing restrictions on First Nations people. Example - if you marry outside your tribe you lose status rights. (Looks good.. seeing if I can purchase a copy for this semester. Trailer on youtube.)
Reservation Solder - **47 minutes free on YouTube**. Follows a few young First Nations boys (from prairies - Rosthern etc) who decide to join the Canadian military rather than stay in their hometowns and fall into the rut of gangs, violence, alcoholism, abuse. Novel: I'm trying a new novel for A30. It's called A Quality of Light by Richard Wagamese. One character in the story is raised with an alcoholic father and is a fighter / gets in trouble with the law. He stays in trouble with the law through to adulthood where he buckles down in an office to contest the treatment of Natives during the Oka Crisis. The other character is an only child raised by a strongly Protestant farming family and is very sheltered but a caring and devoted Christian. He becomes a minister and is a man of God. The irony is that the first is a white boy and the second is a First Nations boy (adopted at birth).
Movie: The Snow Walker (based on Marley Fowat's story "Tundra" if you're unaware of it). It's a great and appropriate-for-school movie. Am going to compare / contrast it with The Painted Door (the old classic).

This is a Power Point presentation that was created and shared by Bev Ptolemy (Beechy Colony) when she worked as a Learning Coach in the Division. There are some great ideas here for your students as they prepare for that dreaded Departmental Exam!
This is Cindy Tulp's (Outlook High) 2010 version of the formal essay. I personally love the title of this booklet, but Cindy has done a great job breaking this "dreaded" writing task! - JB
ELA 30A Outcome CC A 30.2 Create and present visual and multimedia representations including using photographs to explain a range of contemporary course-related perspectives or landscapes. This is a poetry assignment has been created to meet this Outcome. Shared by Jen Loken at Westcliffe.
